Happy Wedding Wednesday friends!
It's crazy to think how I've already almost been engaged for a whole year (!!) As much fun this year has been, the moment A put that ring on my finger, I got super paranoid about losing it or ruining it. Although I have a warranty on the ring (thank God), I have yet to get my ring insured. I know, I know...this is something I definitely NEED to do, it's on my ever growing list.
One of the very first questions I had in my head after I got engaged was, when should I take my ring off??
I heard so many different answers from friends, the interwebs, etc...I decided I needed to go based on my life and what worked for me. So take this list with a grain of salt, because what works for me may not work for you. This is just a general list of times you should consider taking that bling bling off.
//1// At the gym
I work out 2-3 times during the week and although it's mostly cardio, I still take my ring off and leave it behind at home (on a ring holder). I don't wait to risk scratching or having a prong come loose if I accidentally bang it against a machine.
//2// Doing chores/cleaning
I don't take it off if I'm say sweeping or something, but doing the dishes or deep cleaning something I definitely do. I don't want harsh chemicals and dirt getting in my ring which makes it sparkle less.
//3// Showering
This is one that my friend told me I don't need to follow, but for my peace of mind I do. I have always taken all my jewelry off (real or fake) before I get in the shower because I don't want the body wash, shampoo, etc to mess with my jewelry. Plus it could just slip off while you wash your hair and you may not know until it's too late.
//4// In the pool/ocean/lake
This is a big one I've heard about. I've read don't take your ring on your honeymoon or any vacations, to get a dummy ring to wear that's a CZ, etc. Last summer I was at my friend's lake house and we took the boat out on the water. We were just hanging in the water, my hands were above water, but one of them had heard that fish are attracted to shiny things. So in the off chance my hand went under water I didn't want a fish biting my bling off. I immediately took my ring off and didn't think twice. Plus if the water is cold, that shrinks your fingers which could make that pretty ring slide right off. This one is a biggie, you don't need it in the water, so just remove it to play it safe.
//5// Getting ready
When I get ready in the morning I do a lot with my hands like putting moisturizer on, concealer, etc. I bought a bunch of plastic ring holders to place around the house where I would need to take my ring off. The kitchen, bathrooms, and my vanity all have one, so that when I need to take my ring off...I can put it in a safe place. Just like with the chemicals and dirt, I don't want to get my makeup particles in my ring either, so I just keep it off until I'm finished getting ready.

Now it’s your turn to link-up and share your wedding tales.
Macy and I love reading all about your big day, someone else’s wedding adventures, or anything else wedding related. We just can’t wait to read all about it!
These are such good tips! My friend turned me onto the Qalo rings which are silicone rings that you can buy that I wear at the gym or on vacations and such! If you want I can send you a $5 off coupon! I also got my husband one, he works outside with his hands everyday and it has been great!
ReplyDeletethese feel like all good tips! i take off all my jewelry when i work out and shower too. i mean, it's good to protect the precious gems!

Yup, I agree with you 100% on these! I never wear my ring doing any of the above! I was out with a friend who wore hers when we went to the beach and she lost it in the ocean and didn't even realize right away because we were in the water. Traumatizing! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes
ReplyDeleteI do a lot of the same ones! I also try to remember to take it off whenever I put lotion on, but half the time, I forget, haha! xx
ReplyDeleteI never take my ring off but I know I should. I thought about getting a CZ ring for vacations because Dave is paranoid that I will lose it, but I haven't yet. Great post!
ReplyDeleteThose were all the times I took my ring off too...now I workout with my ring and my bands oops LOL! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston
ReplyDeleteI take my ring off for showering and cleaning! I don't want it ot get ruined. (I can't do the gym thing though because I go during my lunch break and I would be nervous it would get stolen if I took it off!)

I take mine off when I'm cooking (specifically when I'm mixing meats because ew meat guts), and also in the shower. I've worn mine at the beach, in pools, etc and it's been fine but I totally get why you would want to be safe on that.
ReplyDeleteI normally take my rings off for all the situations that you just described, and I also take my rings off before I go to bed! One of the main reasons I take my ring off when I work out is because I hate how much I swell during a workout, and my rings tend to get way too tight.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited to have found you on Blog Boss Babe! I love wedding posts :) I've been doing Wedding Wednesday posts recapping our wedding planning last year. I love your tips about when to take off your ring! My husband always told me to take off my ring when we went hiking but since we were newly engaged I didn't want to. I ended up falling and caught myself on my hands. Thankfully the stone was facing up, but I still scratched my ring really badly and had to get it fixed before our wedding. Lesson learned! Now I take it off for the gym/exercise, swimming and the shower. Our shower drain is really big and it could easily fall through and be lost forever! Great post :) Sorry my comment is so long!
ReplyDeleteI definitely realized that I need to take my ring off when I get ready. Thank goodness for ring cleaner to get hairspray off lol. Just did my first Wedding Wednesday and have been engaged about 9 months with 8 months to go!
ReplyDeleteI do all of these too! I like your idea of buying a bunch of ring holders to put around various places in the house!
ReplyDeleteI'd be devastated if I lost my ring! I usually take mine off as soon as I get home so it's not on for household cleaning/chores, work outs, and showers. However, I do wear when traveling even in the water. I've always heard and have been of the thought that it's safer on you than it is being left back at the hotel room.

I have a routine where I take it off as soon as I get through the door when I get home ( I have a place for it on my vanity). I don't like wearing it around the house when I'm doing chores, cleaning etc. Great tips!
ReplyDeletei don't take my rings off at all unless i'm travelling. it is definitely scratched from the gym. i don't mind though because i get it cleaned/polished/whatever often and it's all shiny and pretty and new. i do wear a plain wedding band when we travel though, just for peace of mind.
ReplyDeleteI'm so bad about wearing my ring at all times, it's insured so that is my excuse lol. I do take it off whenever I clean but then I usually swipe exam gloves from work and clean with those on ;-)
ReplyDeleteI always take mine off for showering and to sleep (unless we're traveling) but I love to just let my fingers breathe a little. I could see taking it off for the gym too - it always pushes up into my finger holding onto the machines.
ReplyDeleteI think all of these instances are very true. I never shower or get ready with my ring on and I don't sleep with it either. I may or may not forget to take it off when I go swimming but that's a good one.
ReplyDeleteMine is insured but I'm still a nervous nut about it. They come off the minute I get home from work since I usually work out, cook, clean, etc. great tips!!
ReplyDeleteI love these tips! I also usually turn my rings around when we're in bad areas.. like a random alleyway full of homeless people in New Orleans the other day haha, or when I used to live in Atlanta and walk from my apartment to downtown.
